What we do:

We deliver handmade cards on special occasions such as holidays. By doing so, we hope to let our recipients realize that they are not forgotten or alone on that special day, and that so many people are celebrating right alongside them.

So, why don’t we choose to raise money for hospitals instead? Why not donate some much-needed medical supplies, or batches of freshly baked snacks? What about handmade holiday cards is so important, and how will they help make a difference?

Holidays are celebrated to give people a sense of belonging, or a day to express what is important to us. Some holidays help us celebrate generations of family by connecting us back to our history, and other holidays bring diverse groups of people together in harmony and peace. Spending one of these important days in a hospital ward can be particularly challenging, as people may feel left out of an important celebration, that only ever happens once in a year.

By delivering handmade cards on such occasions, we hope to let each recipient realize that they are not forgotten or alone on that special day, and that so many people are celebrating right alongside them. As unbelievable as it sounds, a seemingly flimsy and insignificant card has the potential to change someone’s life. By motivating a hospital patient towards celebrating their holidays, we are also helping them take a step towards a more “normal-feeling” hospital stay. Normalizing the hospital experience can make the patient’s mind feel more at ease, which is crucial for their long-term well being. A nurse named Sandie once said that if “a person’s mind is in a peaceful place, their body will soon follow suit, as our minds and bodies are connected.”

Of course, we do realize that a majority of these people have loving families and friends who will not forget to reach out to them during holidays. However, as each year passes, more and more people are shifting towards holiday texts, or e-greetings. We believe that cards are much more thought-provoking and meaningful, as students who volunteer with us will spend time and emotional energy crafting custom messages and pairing them with crafty illustrations.

Why Lotus?

The reasoning for ‘lotus’ originates from the deep-rooted symbolism this flower has in many cultures around the world. The Lotus is prominently regarded as a symbol for healing and overcoming obstacles. Although seemingly delicate, the flower is quite resilient, for even when it’s roots are in the dirtiest waters, the Lotus still produces the most beautiful flower. Thus, our name serves to remind those who receive our cards that no matter what life is currently throwing at them, they are strong and will be able to recover from it.
